Purity, identity and mg per vial: three different pieces of information
“99% purity” is an incomplete statement if the method and extent are not known. To evaluate a vial, at least identity, purity and quantity of material must be separated.
FAST RESPONSE
Does 99% purity mean there are all the mg listed?
No. Chromatographic purity, identity and content are different measurements. A vial may show a high purity percentage and not have been tested for quantity. Find a content essay with method and units.
Editorial illustration · HexpepsWhat HPLC Purity Represents
In the analysis described by Bachem, HPLC purity compares the signal of the target peptide with other species detected under the conditions of the method. It is a data relative to the analysis, not a universal measurement of all the components of a vial.
Therefore, identify the technique and conditions before interpreting the percentage. Don't transfer a figure from one report to another method without checking what it is measuring.
Content and nominal mass are not synonyms
The solid material may include residual water and counterions. Bachem distinguishes material weight, peptide content and analytical purity. For accurate research calculations, the mass basis used must be defined.
A 10 mg label and 99% purity are not enough to conclude that exactly 9.9 mg of the target has been verified. You need a content or quantity determination to support that calculation.
Identity requires its own verification
Mass spectrometry is used in identity control; Its interpretation depends on the method and the molecule. A high purity value is not a substitute for that information.
Requests that the report identify the reference and available results. If there are modifications, mixtures or different chemical forms, check how they are reflected in the tests carried out.
Sterility and endotoxins are separate questions
Microbiological results cannot be deduced from a chromatographic percentage. A document only responds to the determinations it contains. Nor does a good visual appearance demonstrate the absence of contamination.
The documentation required depends on the intended use of the material. For research, define the acceptance criteria of the essay and ask for each relevant data; For human use, the corresponding sanitary framework is required.
What each essay answers
Commercial language often compresses several checks into “tested.” Separating them avoids interpreting one figure as the answer to everything. A report may measure one property and leave out the others; asks for those required by the research objective.
A chromatographic percentage depends on the method and the components detected. To talk about quantity, look for a quantitative essay with a base, units and method. Bachem also distinguishes the net content of non-peptide material, such as counterions and moisture.
| Question | Data that can answer it | Does not prove on its own |
|---|---|---|
| What molecule is it? | Identity by an appropriate method, such as MS | Quantity or sterility |
| What chromatographic ratio appears? | HPLC purity and method | All mg declared |
| How much compound is there? | Quantitative content or essay | Absence of microorganisms |
| Is there microbial growth? | Sterility test and result | Absence of endotoxins |
| What level of endotoxins is detected? | Test, units and limit | Clinical product safety |

Example: high purity, pending quantity
Fictitious case: a label indicates 10 mg and the report only provides identity and 99.5% HPLC purity. You can record that those two properties were examined in an identified sample. You cannot conclude that the vial contains 9.95 mg: that calculation treats the chromatographic percentage as if it were a weighing or content assay.
If another report provides an amount of 10.4 mg for that sample, save that data with its method and uncertainty when it is available. A difference from the label is compared to the agreed specification; "There is more" does not automatically equate to "it is better."
Frequently asked questions
Does high purity prove that a vial is sterile?
No. Chromatographic purity and sterility are evaluated with different tests.
Can I correct the mg by multiplying only by the HPLC purity?
Don't assume that calculation expresses the actual mass of the target. The mass basis and analytical content of the batch must be known.
Is a vial with more mg better?
It is a deviation that must be evaluated against the stated objective and its tolerance. Accuracy and consistency of content matter; an excess is not a universal improvement.
Does 99.9% purity make it unnecessary to look at the rest of the report?
No. You still need identity, result basis, relationship to the lot, and the other properties relevant to the project.
